Riverwalk

The City of St. Marks is proposing the development of a Riverwalk Master Plan. Working with the public and local government, the Riverwalk Master Plan would identify the limits of the Riverwalk Corridor, outline needed policies in the City of St. Marks Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code, and designate Public Access Points to the Riverfront. When the St Marks Riverwalk Corridor is clearly identified with community buy-in, incentives will provide for redevelopment in an orderly and coordinated fashion by property owners along the river. The proposed Riverwalk structure is anticipated to be the centerpiece project, providing the focal point for the whole community and serving as a showpiece destination for the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail which connects to the City of Tallahassee sixteen miles north.

Unlike heavier construction of bulkheads and similar structures, the riverwalk as proposed by the St. Marks Visioning Committee would preserve coastal resources such as aquatic vegetation found near the riverfront while providing designated public waterfront access. In addition to the riverwalk, the St. Marks Riverwalk Master Plan will include building height policies and minimum clearances between buildings to preserve views of the riverfront as proposed by the St. Marks Visioning Committee. This project will provide a mechanism by which the City of St. Marks can best implement the vision identified by the community while enhancing and protecting coastal resources.
